Nakaya Akatame or Kurotame ?

Written by Catherine on Wednesday 11 June 2014 in Japanese pens

What to choose : Nakaya Akatame or Kurotame ? Let me explain the colours. Both pens are crafted in a Tamenuri technique and both have the same "red" middle layer. For the Kurotame the craftsman added a little bit of black urushi to the transparant upper layers. By doing so the Kurotame pen becomes more black than the Akatame. Both pens will enlighten by time and the red colour will be more expressed.

On the picture you see the Akatame on the left and the Kurotame on the right.

What do wine and ink have in common?

Written by Catherine on Thursday 30 January 2014 in Ink

Connoisseurs! And ink connoisseurs have many things in common with discerning oenologists. As with wine-sampling sessions, in a certain sense the creation of a new ink or colour is a special moment when the ink is "tasted", submitted to different tests and assessed for quality like a vintage wine. One talks about consistency, clearness, lighfastness, saturation, nuance, tones, colours and viscosity. One talks about the combination between ink and paper, and ink and nibs. As you can notice ink is much more than a just a colour, it makes a world of difference.
