The Battle of Itsukushima was fought in October 1555 between Motonari Mori and Harukata Sue at Itsukushima in Aki Province (today Hiroshima Prefecture.) This Battle is legendary because Mori's army was victorious despite an overwhelming disadvantage, with only 4000 troops against Sue's army of 20 000 men.

The Battle of Itsukushima, along with The Siege of Kawagoe Castle and the Battle of Okehazama, are known as the Three Great Surprise Battles of Japan during the Sengoku Period (warring state period 1467 - 1573.)

The Battle began when Harukata Sue killed Yoshikata Ouchi, one of the two feudal lords and an influential figure in the Chugoku region. Haruka, who had killed his master to achieve supremacy, took control of the Ouchi family. Motonari saw an opportunity to extend his power with the weakening of the Ouchi family, while Harukata fell into a sense of crisis. The Battle of Itsukushima eventually led to a confrontation between the two lords.

Motonari was a military commander with an excellent sense of strategy. Motonari chose Itsukushima as the battle site. As the sea surrounded Itsukushima, it was difficult for a large army to maneuver, and reinforcements were not available. Motonari requested support from the Murakami navy, a powerful force in the Seto Inland Sea, where Itsukushima is located.

There was thunder and rainstorms the night before the Battle, but Motonari's troops prepared for the Battle.Early in the morning, Motonari attacked Harukata's army from behind and Kobayakawa's troops, who had just landed on the island, provided additional firepower. Harukata's army went down.

Harukata committed suicide and the victorious Motonari quickly expanded his power and later became supreme ruler of the Chugoku region.
