Description:

This is "Dobrynya and the Dragon", a pen with all the visual impact of a comic strip. Every millimetre on this tiny surface is painted; the images run smoothly into one another with quite astonishing details, accurate strokes and a rich colour palette. You will discover new details every time you look at this pen. The husband-and-wife team of artists who created these pens have developed an instantly recognisable style that is understatedly exuberant and dynamic. They were trained in the techniques of the Palekh school and by masters in the use of tempera. This is a rather large pen, but when you get used to it you will enjoy every second.

Fedoskino, Palekh, Mstera and Kholui are known to connoisseurs the world over for their sublime lacquer miniatures. This art form developed in the early 18th century and, partly under the influence of the rich historical tapestry of folklore and iconography, it is now widely regarded as one of Russia's most distinctive artistic achievements. Click here and learn more about the history of Russian Lacquer Art!
