This decorative textile soon spread beyond the bathhouse walls and gained popularity among merchants as a fine packaging material. And in the era of everyday (boring) kimono, furoshiki were introduced as dainty handbags.

One of the advantages of a furoshiki is that it adapts to the shape of the content. Centuries of experimentation have developed dozens of established methods of tying a traditional furoshiki.
