Description:

Furoshiki is a traditional cloth that has been used in Japan for over 1000 years. Dating back to the Nara period (710-794 AD), it was originally used to carry belongings to the sento (public bath). This decorative textile soon spread beyond the bathhouse walls and gained popularity among merchants as a fine packaging material. And in the era of everyday (boring) kimono, furoshiki were introduced as dainty handbags.

One of the advantages of a furoshiki is that it adapts to the shape of the content. Centuries of experimentation have developed dozens of established methods of tying a traditional furoshiki.

You will find hundreds of tutorials on youtube that will show you the way to complicated or easy ways to turn a gift into a fantastic present or to tie a practical handbag or extra tote bag. The knotting is not tricky, and the result is spectacular in its simplicity.

In recent years there has been a furoshiki revival thanks to the push to be more environmentally conscious. Furoshiki is sustainable, ecological, practical, and versatile!

Furoshiki are made in silk, cotton, linen, and synthetic fabrics and are printed with the most beautiful designs and colors. The deluxe versions in silk or Maki-e printing can also be used as wall coverings or as home decoration.
