Sailor Rei V Nagano Sosaku Shunkei Kiso nuri * Sailor Rei Series
The Traditional Japanese Lacquer Art REI Series was named to reflect the passion with which Sailor Pen crafts these writing instruments. They embody the profoundly moving beauty of Japanese tradition and provide people with joy and inspiration. From the fountain pen barrel to the pen pouch and the beautifully braided high-grade Sanada strap on the paulownia wood case, everything is crafted in Japan to celebrate the Japanese traditions and origins of the REI Series.
The precious value of lacquerware was established during the Nara and Heian periods as a symbol of wealth among the nobility and as a beauteous, sacred embodiment of the gods. The word “Urushi (Japanese lacquer)” is said to have originated from the word “Uruwashi”, meaning “there is nothing more beautiful”. With the Japanese aesthetic beliefs flourishing at the time, it was only natural that Urushi was coined from the word Uruwashi. The Chinese character for Uruwashi can also be read as “rei”.
